Adolescent dog recall problems: why your dog suddenly stopped listening

A dog who used to come back reliably can seem to forget everything during adolescence. More independence, stronger interest in smells and other dogs, and harder environments can make recall look like it has disappeared. It usually means the skill needs rebuilding at the new difficulty level — not that your dog is being deliberately difficult.

Why teenage dog recall gets worse

Recall is competing with the environment. As adolescent dogs become more confident and curious, distractions that were once easy to ignore become much more rewarding. If your dog responds indoors but ignores you outside, the cue is not necessarily broken; the outside version simply needs more practice and better reinforcement.

What to do when your dog ignores recall outside

Temporarily lower the difficulty. Use a long line where appropriate, practise at a distance from major distractions, reward successful returns generously, and avoid repeatedly calling when you already know your dog is unlikely to respond. One successful repetition is more useful than five ignored cues.

If your dog runs to other dogs instead of coming back

Create more distance before asking for recall and reward your dog for choosing you before they are fully locked onto the other dog. Management matters while the skill is rebuilding: preventing repeated self-rewarding run-offs makes training easier and safer.

A simple recall reset

  1. Start where your dog can succeed easily.
  2. Use one clear recall cue rather than repeating it.
  3. Reward the return, not just the final sit beside you.
  4. Increase distraction gradually instead of testing the dog at maximum difficulty.
  5. Keep sessions short enough that both of you still want another repetition.
