Dog runs to other dogs and ignores recall? Here’s what to train
Other dogs can be one of the strongest rewards in the environment. If your dog races over instead of returning, practise before they are fully committed to the greeting and prevent repeated run-offs while recall is being rebuilt.
Start with distance, not a louder recall
Find the distance where your dog can notice another dog and still respond to you. Reward check-ins and successful turns toward you there. Gradually reduce distance as those choices become easier.
Stop rehearsing the run-off
Use appropriate management such as a long line while training. Every successful sprint to another dog can reinforce ignoring you. Management is not the final skill; it gives you enough control to practise the skill successfully.
Make returning worth it
Reward the return generously and, when safe, sometimes release your dog back to sniff or greet. Coming to you should not always predict that all fun ends. See the recall training guide and adolescent recall regression guide.
